Summary
The cemetery at Lexden, first uncovered in 1938 when a watermain was laid along the west side of Clare Road.
Full description
The cemetery at Lexden, first uncovered in 1938 when a watermain was laid along the west side of Clare Road. This part of the cemetery is all pre-Roman Belgic. Further north a few scattered burials were found, of later date with Gallo-Belgic pottery, the pottery and brooches showing Roman influence. This phase of the cemetery may extend into the Roman period but end about the time of the founding of the colonia. The proximity to the Belgic burials of the 2 Lexden tumuli suggests that this is the main burial area for pre-Roman Colchester. <1> To the north of the Lexden Tumulus around St Clare Road and St Clare Drive an extensive cemetery is attested by at least 14 contemporary flat cremation graves. <2>
