Full description

The eastern end of the World War II anti-tank ditch that ran through Hertfordshire and formed part of the Outer London Defence Ring <2> was still partly extant in air photos taken by the RAF in 1946. Most sections had already been backfilled, and these show up as a soilmark scar traversing the landscape. Two other long sections were detected [10233, 10234], each over seven miles in length <3>. The course of the ditch was heavily augmented by pillboxes, seemingly at every directional change, and continued towards the east through Essex <4>.
