Full description

The 1878 OS map <1> shows here on the east side of Wigginton Bottom a plot of land labelled Clayhill. Within it, at the north and south ends, are rows of what appear to be small terraced cottages, seven at the north end and six at the south. Between them is what appears to have been a slightly larger house or pair of houses. All are surrounded by paths and trees, without individual plots. By 1898 <2> a third row of four cottages, with front plots, had been built opposite the northern row on the west side of the road. These two rows lay across the Grim's Ditch earthwork [15575]. By 1924 <3> all these small houses had been demolished, and three pairs of Rothschild estate cottages built on the east side of the road. See also [17620].
The cottages are also on the 1841 tithe map <5>.
Evaluation on the site of the northern row on the east side of the road revealed a narrow foundation of flint with lime mortar, evidently belonging to the 19th century building <4>.
