Full description

Extremely rare WWII brick and concrete fortified bunker of massive proportions. Fully 116' long x 10' wide x 6' high, this structure was built on the base of an old pigsty <1> to dominate, through machine-gun apertures, the wide valley on its N side. Now partly demolished, the major portion is 62' long with a further 10' remaining at the opposite end. Oddly, the inner height is only 3' necessitating the defenders crawling into position before lying at the loopholes. The site forms part of the farmyard\paddock <2>.

<1> Mr Parr, Tanfield Stud Farm, 23.1.92 (Verbal communication). SHT7129.

<2> Fred Nash (HCC), site visit and photographs, 23.1.1992 (Unpublished document). SHT3718.
