Full description

Barn of early to mid 16th century date <1>. It has been suggested that this was built for William or Gyles Capell between 1505 and 1556 <4>. A lofty rectangular barn 101ft 6ins long, of red brick in English bond. It faces east, forming the W side of the entrance courtyard at Hadham Hall [1981]. The roof was replaced and buttresses added in 1902, and it was adapted as a school hall after 1949 <1>.
The barn is listed as 16th century, but according to <3> it belonged to the 1440s Baud family manor house and was contemporary with it. It remained part of the post-medieval farmstead [30907].

2002 TIMBER FARM BUILDINGS SURVEY DESCRIPTION:
Brick barn with some brick nogging and buttresses. Large opening to east face, some windows with shaped brick voussoirs creating a possibly 4-centred arch. Possibly two inserted windows to north end of east face. Gable ended roof with clay tiles. North face has three airvents, each with nine holes; one is in the gable, two are on the ground floor <2>.
