Summary
Rectangular feature, now gone, suggested as a possible moat
Monument Types
- MOAT? (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1500 AD)
- POND (Post Medieval - 1501 AD to 1900 AD)
Full description
'Possible moat at The Bury. No other details' <1, citing Moated Sites Research Group record card>. Apparently a pond, infilled in recent landscaping of the park. No sign of a moat <2>.
The 1878 OS map <3> shows the feature in question, a rectangular island surrounded by a narrow channel (not certainly water-filled), 30m x 23.5m. It lay 120m north of the Obelisk [495], against the belt of woodland, and did not have the appearance of a moat. It is more likely another feature of the post-medieval landscaping. The alteration into a stud farm in the 20th century removed all trace of it.
