- PILLBOX (World War II - 1939 AD to 1945 AD)
Full description
Hexagonal, brick & concrete Type 22 <1> pillbox on the S slope of a valley, between Tanfield Farm and St Lawrence Farm. This pillbox, once commanding wide views, is now almost totally hidden in a thick hedge of bushes & bramble, which runs from N to S. Although the outer brickwork has deteriorated the roof still retains traces of the original crenellations, presumably constructed to break up the straight outline & prevent rainwater from running down between the concrete roof & brick wall shuttering <2>.
