Full description
Rectangular building, built of concrete with exterior brick facing, on E side of Matham's Wood. Entrance passageway is angled/doglegged to prevent direct access to the interior. In good condition <1>. It measures 14m x 4m and is 3m high. The shelter was originally divided into several rooms, however only one interior cross wall survives. Air ducting holes remain at each end of the building but the steel ducting has been removed. It is believed a shelter of this size could accommodate 33 people <3>. Marks on the walls indicate where the bunks were fastened. Shown on 1960 O.S. 1:10000 map, and on 1:2500 map. Both show a much larger, approximately T-shaped building adjacent and to the N. This building was demolished in recent years <2>. A 1944 plan of the airfield suggests that this building was used as Flight Offices <3>.
