On 17/02/1871 the Stamford Mercury reported the discovery of bronze 'celts'. "In opening a gravel pit some 200 yards east of the site of Essendine Castle the labourers found just above the gravel and not far from the surface, ten bronze axe heads or chisels of types generally attributed to the British period"… "The 'celts' just found exhibit two or three different forms and some of them are very fresh and perfect."
They were in the hands of Mr North of Essendine but Crowther-Beynon was unable to trace them c.1908. A small quarry at TF 051 128 is marked on OS 6" maps and fits the description of the findspot.
