Full description

Tower keep at Tattershall Castle, built in c.1440 by Ralph Cromwell, Lord High Treasurer, on the site of the earlier castle of Robert Tateshale, which was built in 1231. Built of red brick laid in English bond, with darker lattice lozenge decorations to upper parts, ashlar dressings and leaded roofs. Rectangular plan with facetted angle towers, originally with attached hall to courtyard side. Of 5 storeys with undercroft, irregular 3 bay front with plinth, chamfered ashlar string course and embattled parapet with machicolated base. Restored between 1911-25 by Lord Curzon, who then presented the whole castle site as it stood then to The National Trust. Several fragments of stained glass believed to have come from the keep are kept in the site museum. These fragments date to the 15th century, to about 1434-50. {2}
