Full description
The Multon (or Great) Chantry chapel at Old Leake was founded by Isabella Friskney. The exact date of its foundation is not known, although the institution is mentioned in a document of 1391. The chapel was dissolved in 1547, and the building is thought to have been converted to a large house at this time. The chapel was surrounded by a moat, most of which has been infilled, though slight depressions of it still survive at TF 3971 4391 and TF 3977 4932. The original chantry house survived until about 1700, when it was largely demolished and rebuilt (see MLI12791). An 'ancient' stone font was found within the remains of the moat in about 1816. {1}{2}{3}
Several fragments of carved stonework have been found in the garden of the present Moulton Chantry House. The stones appear to be pieces of medieval window tracery, and may be remains from the original chantry chapel. {4}
