Summary

Romano-British cemetery site, to the north of the Roman town of Ancaster.

Grid Reference:SK 983 437
Map Sheet:SK94SE
Parish:ANCASTER, SOUTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

Human remains were found whilst foundations for a new bungalow were dug on the site of the former Angel Inn, just north of the Roman town, and on the west side of Ermine Street. Romano-British pottery was collected and 9 inhumation burials were either wholly or partly recovered. The spread of these suggests a sizeable cemetery in this area. {1}{2}

Two shallow, north to south aligned graves were exposed in March 2012, just to the north of the modern junction of Ermine Street and Paddock Close, during the monitoring of groundworks for a new electrical cable in Ancaster. The graves contained the remains of two poorly preserved infant burials. Analysis of the skeletal remains suggests that the individuals were either still-births or had died shortly after birth. No other material was recovered alongside the skeletal remains from either grave. {3}{4}
