Full description
Roman coins and a tessellated pavement was discovered about the year 1776, on land at Park Farm. {1}
Marratt, who appears to report this first actually talks about the 'park grounds'. He also says 'in this town several Roman coins have been found'. {2}
Some contention as to location of villa site, still not resolved. {3}
'"About sixty years ago (c.1760) a tessellated pavement was found in the Park grounds, but destroyed a few days after." There was also a large pot or urn found near it; it contained a sort of coin very uncommon, and what metal it was made of is not known, for on being exposed to the air it fell to powder. The stone that covered it was preserved. There appears to have been an inscription on it, but it was quite illegible.' {4}
