Full description

Sherds of mainly unstratified middle Saxon pottery were recovered in 1975, during excavations at the Church of St Peter. Three sherds were, however, found along with oyster shells and bone fragments in a deposit that was sealed by a fragmentary crushed-chalk surface to the north of the church tower. This surface was cut by the later Saxon graves of the churchyard, and appeared to bear no relation to the church. The finds were thought to indicate possible domestic activity on the site, prior to it becoming a place of worship. {1}{2}{3}
