Full description
PRN 42286
St Martin's Church, Scamblesby was rebuilt in the 1890s. Previously it had been a 'small fabric'. In the rebuilding, a pier of Norman/Early English (1066 to the 13th century) style from the demolished Cawkwell Church was re-used. {1}{2}{3}
During a site visit, it was noted that the former road arrangements around the church are suggestive of an earlier village focus around the church. A gate to the south of the church opens into what is now an arable field, but formerly there was a track here leading to the southern church gate. The eastern boundary of the church is built up to a higher level than the adjacent land, and the southernmost part of the churchyard has been raised about a metre above the level of the adjacent fields. This suggests that when the church was rebuilt in the 19th century, it was apparently done with a different road and plot arrangement than previously.{3}
A parish church built in 1893, by R. H. Fowler, re-using some late 12th century fragments. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
