Full description
The moated site at Manor Farm was apparently the Tournay's residence and perhaps a late-comer in the settlement pattern of Caenby, though nevertheless existing by the later 13th century. It occupies a marked dip, and despite much alteration and degrading retains some vestige of an apparently square or rectangular shape in origin. The west and south sides have been somewhat altered by a modern drain and new entrance on the west. The L-shaped pond on the east is an ornamental feature not shown on the Tithe Award map of 1844, its north to south element dug through the line of the earlier east side which the map shows continuing north to match the west side. The same map shows the west end of the north side still in existence where farm buildings now stand. Access was on that side in 1824 and perhaps earlier. In 1541 Henry VIII stayed at the house and Gervase Holles recorded a series of armorial stained glass windows in the hall and parlour sometime between 1634 and 1642. The present farm house is early Georgian. {3}
There is a 1978 RCHM 1:1500 plan in the HER map tank. {4}
