SITE OF A MOTTE AND BAILEY CASTLE AT GOLTHO

Grid Reference:TF 116 774
Map Sheet:TF17NW
Parish:GOLTHO, WEST LINDSEY, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

PRN 50493
AFTER AROUND 1080, AND PERHAPS CONNECTED WITH THE SUBINFEUDATION OF THE MANOR, A SMALL MOTTE AND BAILEY CASTLE WAS ERECTED OVER AN EARLIER MANORIAL ENCLOSURE, WITH THE MOTTE IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE SUB-RECTANGULAR EARTHWORK AND A GATEHOUSE AND A BRIDGE ON THE EAST SIDE. TWO SUCCESSIVE SINGLE-AISLED HALLS OF CLAY WITH VERTICAL POSTS PROVIDED DOMESTIC ACCOMMODATION. FINALLY AROUND 1150, THE BAILEY BANKS WERE PULLED IN TO CREATE A FLAT-TOPPED MOUND FOR A HALL OR PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE, SOON ABANDONED (PRN 51232). {2}{3}
SEE BERESFORD, 1987 FOR A DETAILED DESCRIPTION. {3}
PAUL EVERSON SUGGESTS THAT THE FINDS AND DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE SUPPORTS A LATER DATING - AT THE EARLIEST IN THE LATE 1130s; WITH A POSSIBLE ENFORCED SLIGHTING OF THE EARTHWORKS IN c1217. FOR A DETAILED DISCUSSION SEE LHA 1988. {7}
