Summary

The site of the deserted settlement of Goltho or Bullington.

Grid Reference:TF 114 775
Map Sheet:TF17NW
Parish:GOLTHO, WEST LINDSEY, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

Excavations of 3 crofts of the deserted settlement site was undertaken in 1970 prior to levelling. The excavations revealed details of village remains dating from the 11th century onwards. The excavated remains included 3 phases of dwelling houses, a barn and crew yard, a smithy, cobbled yards and metalled roads. {1}{2}{3}

Collections of surface finds made during fieldwalking in 1966 (after levelling part of the site), 1970, 1976 and 1977 included Roman pottery, medieval pottery including Stamford ware and other finds, and post medieval pottery and finds of the 15th to 18th century. {4}{5}{6}{7}

Paul Everson suggests that the deserted settlement site represents the well documented village of Bullington rather than the almost undocumented hamlet of Goltho. For a detailed discussion of the documentary and excavated evidence see LHA 1988. {8}{9}{10}{11}{12}
