Full description
In around 1150 the earthworks of the motte and bailey castle (PRN 50493) were levelled to create a flat-topped mound for a large timber aisled hall and ancillary buildings or a principal residence, which was abandoned by the end of the 12th century, probably in favour of a new manorial residence at Goltho Hall (PRN 50292). The small finds assemblage is the result of a lack of occupational debris, suggesting that the site did not remain in use for a long period. {1}{2}
For a detailed description see Beresford, 1987. {2}
Paul Everson suggests that the finds and documentary evidence supports a later dating - well into the late 12th century, with abandonment and removal of the manorial residence to Goltho Hall in about 1220-1235. For a detailed discussion see LHA 1988. {4}
