Full description
A Wesleyan Methodist Chapel is depicted on the OS County Series map. It was built in 1838. {1}{2}
The site was visited in 2009. The present chapel was built in 1881 to supercede the earlier chapel of 1838 in Cross Lane, now demolished (PRN 61525), and is still in use as North Hykeham Methodist Church. Prior to the building of the Cross Street chapel Methodist and Anglican services were held in a room adjoining the Harrows Inn. The extant chapel is built of red brick with a gabled roof with slate covering. The gable facing the street, which is rendered, and painted pink, has three stepped lancet windows with Y-tracery, a hoodmould and leaded stained glass. The gable has broad wooden verge boards and beneath the window is an ashlar tablet dated 1881. The side elevations have pairs of pointed windows, with upvc frames, separated by buttresses and have two string-courses of blue brick. The north west elevation shows much disturbance around two openings which suggests at least one, and probably two, pointed doorways originally and a porch is shown on the County Series map. The south east elevation is now partially covered by a modern annexe, though an annexe is shown on the County Series map. The rear gable elevation is rendered with a small circular window in the gable. A modern gabled annexe is attached to the rear of the chapel by a porch. The chapel has a Sunday School.{3}{4}
