Summary

Roman finds from land to the south of Boston Road, Sleaford

Grid Reference:TF 078 457
Map Sheet:TF04NE
Parish:KIRKBY LA THORPE, NORTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

PRN 64445
A large quantity of coarse Roman pottery was found during excavations to the south of Boston Road. A few coins and metal items were also found. Most of these finds were unstratified and no evidence of Roman structures or land use was seen. These finds are probably related to the settlement to the north (PRN 60584). {1}{2}
Fragments of Romano-British pottery were found nearby, at the junction of Boston Road and Russell Crescent, during construction of a gas pipeline in 1984. The pottery included remains of a large greyware jar, a Samian dish and vase, and assorted bowls in fabrics including shell-gritted and poor quality colour-coated and burnished wares which may be local copies of Nene Valley products. One vase appeared to have come from kilns at North Hykeham and dated to approx 70-100 AD. The other pottery appears to date to 150-200 AD. No structural remains were uncovered, although part of a road surface was seen (see PRN 65322). These finds are probably related to the settlement to the north (PRN 60584). {3}
