Full description

War memorial, Ashby High Street. It is a Celtic stone cross, mounted on a red marble shaft and pedestal. The stone plinth is decorated, and there are three stone steps. It was unveiled by Sir Berkeley Sheffield on 31st May 1925.

The pedestal is inscribed with the names of 63 men who died in the Great War 1914-18. The plinth is inscribed with the dates 1939-45, but no individual names.

This memorial was moved from Ashby Turn in 1963 to its present position, north of St Paul's church. [1, 2].

The memorial was regilded by Serenity Memorials Ltd in 2014. [3]

An application was made to list the memorial in 2023. The advice report for DCMS for listing the Memorial made the recommendation to add to the List. Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20; Architectural Interest: as a well-executed Celtic cross with a Sword of Sacrifice. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has decided to add Ashby War Memorial to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. [5, 6]
