Full description

{1} Very rare survival of two storey stabling for a town centre Hotel. Seems to date, in its present form, after 1887, on map and stylistic evidence. Internally much modified but still much surviving of interest.

{2} Architectual survey of the hotel. The existing brick-built stables were added to the hotel afer the sale to Phipps Brewery in 1896. An entry in the Stamford Mercury records that in June 1899 'the tender of Mr W J Payne of Kettering has been accepted for the new stables at the Royal Hotel'. The new building is recorded on the 1900 Ordnance Survey map. By 1909, the hotel was advertised with garaging facilities for motor cars including 'an engineer and petrol'. The earlier stable block was retained in the courtyard for some time.
