Full description
MENTIONED IN 1301 LAY SUBSIDY. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT CENTRE FOR ITS MARKET AND ON THE MAINROAD NORTH. RAISED TO THE GROUND IN 1322 BY THE SC OTS. IT MAY HAVE HAD A BISHOPS PALACE; A FRIARY ORTWO; A CASTLE AND ANGLIAN-VIKING SCUPLTURE.
