Full description

NMR printout dated 07.03.02 notes the remains of a 12th century motte and bailey castle. Pickhill (Money Hill), the castle of Roald, Constable of Richmond, was erected during the reign of Henry 1. The motte, square-ish in shape, is about 30 - 40m east to west and about 35m north to south and now about 4m high. The motte is surrounded by a moat some 20m wide. Only part of the motte and the moat in the south-east are visible now, the remainder having been destroyed by the railway embankment and extensive ploughing which has also removed any traces of the bailey (record nol. 21180106.0100). The monument is scheduled (county number N.Yorks 1235). 31.05.02 AG 17.01.03 AG (4)
