Full description
FOR MUCH OF ITS LENGTH THIS IS REPRESENTED BY A MODERN ROAD BUT IT CAN BE IDENTIFIED AS A DITCH AT ITS NORTHERN END AND TWO PARALLEL DITCHES AT THE SOUTHERN END WHERE METALLING IS ALSO SUGGESTED. Form: Cropmark (AP1, AP2)
The road ran from Malton south-west to Stamford Bridge and York (81a) pp359 & 401 in (1)
Source (2) shows the proximity of the Roman enclosure complex at Burythorpe.
The cropmark of two ditches belonging to a Roman road is visible from the parish boundary northwards to a point where it merges with Margary 8IA (270). The junction is obscured by a later hollow-way. The road is part of Margary 29, which was originally thought to join the 8IA further south (3)
Source (4) missing
A watching brief found two parallel ditches, containing pottery of Romano-British date. These appeared to have been heavily truncated by ploughing (5)
This Road is included in a book on Roman Roads in Britain written in 1905 (6)
See also MNY2993 which appears to be a continuation of this road.
