Full description
THE SETTLEMENT AT MALTON MAY HAVE ACHIEVED BOROUGH STATUS IN THE EARLY 12TH CENTURY POSSIBLY SOON AFTER THE SUPPOSED DESTRUCTION OF THE SITE BY STEPHEN'S SUPPORTERS IN 1138. THOUGH CENTRED ON THE MARKET PLACE IT WOULD APPEAR THAT SUBURBS DEVELOPED IN THE MIDDLE AGES.
