  • Description

    1) The remainder of the area is an open court, round the north and east edges of which is a slight bank. Moat on south very slight remains. Banks 5' high from bottom of ditch they form and 38' across remain in west. No buildings remain.
    2) Manor house lay SE of church and near the river. There are traces of the moat and earth-banks of an earlier fortified dwelling.
    4) WB revealed that settlement appears to have started during at least C13, with fishponds (PRN 4118) as later additions. Negative earthworks are well preserved with the original moat protected by C18th-19th partial infilling. Indications that lower foundations of buildings may survive on the moat platform.
    5) During MPP reassessment of site by S Weaver in 1999-2000, site was determined to be of schedulable quality; see DRF for proposed scheduling document.
    6 See for details.
    7) UID: 337088, check Link in Source form for additional information and sources.
    8) The medieval shrunken village of Barford St John has been recorded by field inspection in 1970, indicating a once former larger village. Earthworks visible on aerial photographs also reveal evidence of probable medieval settlement.
