Description

The confluence of a narrow stream 3m wide and a larger channel, which probably flowed into the Kennet, had 4 phases of revetment and bank consolidation. The first phase comprised a bank at the channel confluence in which were 2 wooden stakes, thought to represent a revetment. A radiocarbon date from one stake was cal AD 980-1120 (Har-8556; 1000±70 BP). The second phase consisted of a bank of chalk along the north bank of the main channel. This chalk bank may have been fronted by a row of stakes, as represented by a series of loose fragments of wood. 13th century pottery sherds were associated with the bank. Subsequently, 2 phases of land reclamation considerably narrowed both channels and pottery evidence suggests that this activity continued in the 15th century <1>.
