Description
Reading is first documented in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 870-1 when the Danes wintered here. It is recorded they built a rampart between the Thames and Kennet 'on the right hand side of the royal vill'. There is, however, little to indicate the location of this vill <1>.
