Description

Old Market/ St Mary's Butts area of Reading was probably the focus of the late Saxon town. This area continued to thrive after the establishment of the 'Abbey' market place. However, by the 14th century much trade had been lost to the 'new' market place and the area 'Old Ward' produced least tax <1>.
