The post-medieval to modern town of Reading.
In 1560 Elizabeth I confirmed the royal charter granted to Reading by Henry VII conferring greater powers of self-government to the town.
From the mid 18th century onwards, Reading began to flourish as an important stopping-off point between Bath and London. Regular public coaches began in 1780 and coaching inns in the town included The Bear, The Crown and The George. Leather tanning industries continued from the medieval period and new industries also developed including, brewing, brick and tile making, iron founding and boat building.
Transport links included completion of The Kennet Canal in 1723 and the Kennet and Avon Canal in 1810. The development of the canals also saw the expansion of the town. In 1840, The Great Western Railway reached the town. This resulted in the rapid growth of a number of major industries including the biscuit manufacturers Huntley & Palmer and the seed company of Suttons Seeds .
By the mid 20th century the centre of Reading was developed by demolishing parts of the historic core to provide offices and shopping precincts<1>.
