Description

Linear ditch following contours of Bell Brook into Wroxeter Roman City showing on 1890 OS map <2>

By 1957 the earthwork only survived in two fields (about 2000 feet long). A section cut in 1958 indicated that it was 8 feet (2.4m) wide at the top and 3 feet (0.9m) deep, lined with clay. Gradient at 0.68 per mile. The discharge at about 1 foot of water would have been about 3.58 cusecs (1,930,000 gallons) per day. It has been suggested on AP evidence that the presumed 1st century defence excavated by Kenyon may instead have been the aqueduct channel <3>
Dam extant 1933 at c SJ57950910 <3a>

Showing on APs following the contour <8>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, as one of less than 10 Romano-British Aqueducts <13>

Fieldwork in the 1930s demonstrated that the aqueduct could be traced to a breached dam in the Bell Brook Valley about 3.5 miles east of Wroxeter. It was followed as an earthwork running along the contour, appearing as a v-sectioned leat. Inside the town, the course was all but ploughed out, but it might still be detected trending towards the baths <14>

Sections cut just inside the rampart showed that the channel was clay-lined and lay 3-4 feet below the surface <15>

CMHTS Comment: The earthwork is now completely ploughed out <18>

CMHTS Report <19>

Site visit on 4/11/98 but found no visible traces that could be identified.

-> Source includes a 'Monument Details' record from 1980 that references the work of Webster & Hollingsworth (SSA135) together with field observstions from 1980 and an excavation in 1961. <20>
