Description

Timber store. Circa 1806 adjoining William Jessop's and Thomas Telford's Ellesmere Canal. Weatherboarded timber frame; hipped asbestos sheet roof. 2 levels with wooden dentilled eaves cornice. 3 windows on first floor, C19 three-light casements to left and right with C20 three-light casement to centre. Open to ground floor in 4 bays with wooden posts supporting upper level. Later single-storey range projecting from and closing right bay. Tracks leading from building formerly took coal trucks to steam-powered engine in open ground-floor area of building. This had been adapted from a locomotive engine, the cylinder and piston being mounted vertically, and generated power for working the machinery in the depot. Edward Wilson, The Ellesmere and Llangollen Canal (1975), p53 <1><2>

Part of a complex of canalside buildings, considered to be the best-preserved canal workshop site in the country. <3>

A brief assessment of this building was included in a conservation plan for the canal yard (PRN 06559). Rail tracks associated with the use of this building survive, together with evidence for belt driven machinery. <4>

An historical assessment was prepared in 2007 for the canal yard, including of this building. With its hipped roof and commanding position enclosing the yard, this building is a key feature of the site. It is surprising to discover that it belongs to a second phase of development, and has no obvious function. Built between 1840 and 1884, the building incorporates the pre-existing yard boundary wall. It has stone side walls, and a very substantial hipped roof. The Timber Store seems to have lost its primary function some time around 1880, when the character of the yard and its work began to change radically. This is the likely date for the insertion of the floor and the creation of the present configuration. The List description erroneously dates this building to c1806, and it is clear the building has a complex history which has not been properly appreciated. <5>
