Summary

Medieval features were recorded during an evaluation carried out in 1993 at Lacon Childe School, within the site of the bailey of Cleobury Mortimer Castle (PRN 03248). Evidence of 18th and 19th century gardening activity was also recorded.

Description

Five trenches were excavated in grounds of Lacon Childe School in 1993 as part of an evaluation within the supposed bailey of Cleobury Mortimer castle (PRN 03248). A series of medieval and post-medieval features were recorded, including postholes and a ditch in Trench C, a possible medieval oven in Trench D (PRN 04633). A stone structure of medieval date in Trench E was interpreted as the bridge from motte to bailey. Evidence for post medieval gardening activity was recorded across the site. <1>

A further programme of archaeological investigation was carried out in the NE corner of the Lacon Childe School site, associated with the creation of a new access in 1997. No archaeological features were recorded. <5>
