Description

The site is in poor condition, possibly an oval mound (motte?) into which the hall (PRN 13720) has been built. The remainder of the site has also been badly disturbed by trackways etc. CR FI 1978 <2>

A general photograph of the site was taken during aerial photographic survey in 2012, showing the level of disturbance to the mound. <3>

Moated site marked on 2nd edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch mapping. <4>

On the 1842 map the house is shown to have what seem to be formal grounds on the south side and is more or less the same shape and size as it is now – with the exception of a wing projecting southwards from its eastern end. There seems to be the remains of a still watered arm of the moat island on the south side of the house, crossed by a bridge, with the stream running past its western side. <5>

A watching brief was undertaken on an extension to the south of Binweston Hall, Binweston in two phases, in May 2014 and November 2016. There was no evidence to suggest that this had been redeposited to create a building platform. <6>
