Description

Two trenches cut at right angles to Pepper Street in 1978.
TRENCH 1: Roman defensive features running parallel to Pepper Street. C14 ditches on the same alignment. Pit of C15-C16. Pits and spread of post medieval date.
TRENCH 2: Romano - British ditches. Possible C13 ditch cutting Romano-British ditch. These trenches interpreted as: Phase 1 - Defences of early Roman fort; Phase 2 - Base of RB town wall sealing phase 1; Phase 3 - Recut ditches of medieval date <1><2>

CMHTS Comment:- It is unclear from the report how or why the Roman ditches were recut in the med and post med period when they were sealed by later Roman features. Probably a confusion of the stratigraphy. Further work in this area was carried out in 1982 (PRN 05830) but the exact location of the trenches in 1978 and 1982 are not known. <3>
