Summary
A watching brief by WAAG on a new Water Main observed a layer of "burnt vegetable and wood" which produced a few sherds of Romano-British date.

Description
Watching brief by W.A.A.G. on new watermain. In the Newtown Street section there was "a layer of burnt vegetable and wood" similar to that observed at a previous trench off Newtown Street (PRN 02704). Out of this layer a few sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered. They suggest that this proves that ditches in PRN 02704 are Roman. <1>
CMHTS Comment:- The exact location of this observation is not known, nor its relationship to Roman defences or occupation in the area <2>

NGR indicated on GIS reflects very approximate location, preseumed to be adjacent to previous trenching (see PRN 02704). <4>
