Description

CMHTS Comment:- A sparsely occupied insula, but this may be deceptive since excavations for the gate posts at SJ 5657 0841 failed to reach any archaeology at a depth of over 1m. It is also possible that the clayey subsoil here is less conducive to cropmarks [<2>]. Nonetheless, some features are visible including patchy evidence for long rectilinear buildings aligned east-west along the west side and thus gable end onto Watling Street. The best defined building lies near the east side of the insula and consists of a substantial courtyard structure with an entrance on the north side and sets of rooms along the other 3 sides. A simple cottage house lies in the south east corner of the insula. Also near the south side of the insula are more sections of the intervallum road and rampart buildings of the fortress [<3>]. South of Patch Lane, there is an elongated L shaped building whose southern end may be a later extension of a normal -sized L shaped building and, to the north east, a simple one-cell rectangular structure. A simple rectangular structure on the north side of this southern half of the insula is aligned with Patch Lane and may be modern. <1>
