Description

Traces of old roads <1a>
The disposition of the roads, which lay between the Roman road on the west and the modern road, 550.0m to the east, suggest traces of a deserted Medieval village, of which perhaps Poynton Manor and Poynton Chapel, 300.0m to the south-east, may be the last surviving remains [PRN 01363]. The roads (? first noted on an air photograph) lie within an arable field at present ploughed. Nothing relevant was noted on the ground. <1b>

Could this potentially refer to PRN 00066 - Roman Road from Wroxeter to Rutinium, Whitchurch and Chester which runs to the W of the NGR given in <1>?<2>

A further examination of photography reveals more extensively the system of roads of which those identified at SJ 567 181 are a part. Further sections of road are visible as cropmarks at SJ 567 184 (possible enclosures line the road on each side), also SJ 568 172. In addition, in photography dating to 1929, further roads/tracks are visible as earthworks(?) and soilmarks centred at SJ 563 177.
Most of the sections of road identified appear to be associated with a line of road (visible in the 1929 photography as earthworks and soilmarks) which follows the alleged course of Roman Road 69 [PRN 00066] from SJ 568 166 to SJ 564 181. Generally, the date of the road system appears to be Medieval as the layout of ridge and furrow appears to be integrated with the roads, as does the layout of the still existing road network through Poynton. The road system may, of course, be based on the earlier Roman road. <3><3a>
