Description

Principal cemetery of the Roman town of Wroxeter. Probably both sides of the road, but material only from East side. Inscribed stones found periodically from 1752. Partial excavation in 1861-1862 [<1a>] and 1923 [<1b>], the latter producing a few poorly preserved inhumations, the former a probable Roman building. The full extent of the cemetery is uncertain <1>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, as one of less than 10 Romano-British Cemeteries <4>

Summary of CMHTS Comment on 1861-1862 excavations:
These found a broken tombstone and the site of a possible mausoleum, together with a number of interments located on a shallow bank. In addition, cremation burials in pottery vessels were laid out in rows and scattered over the eastern half of the field. Extensions into the next field to east and west did not locate any more. No interments were found north of the road. Near the find spot of the tombstone, a cremation pit was excavated comprising a square timber-lined pit within the ashes of which were melted glass phials. Most of the other graves were simple pits containing a simple pottery vessel, some accompanied by unguentaria or Samian dishes. Numerous finds, including a surgeons's kit, figured lamps and a complete tinned mirror <9>

CMHTS Report <10>

1923 excavations failed to locate outliers of the 1861-1862 cemetery, though two graves were found <11>
