Description

The second charcoal blast furnace outside the Weald was built in 1564 at Shifnal, (SA 750), with a forge on the Lizard. At the beginning of the C18, the forge was making wrought iron <1a>

A bloom-smithy at Lizard was converted into a forge with fineries in 1564 <1b>

Lizard or Upper Forge; the pool still exists. The forge was working well into the C19 <1c>

Lizard Upper Forge was operated in conjunction with the Shifnal Furnace (PRN 00750), which dates from 1564 <1d>

The forge pool has been drained but the pond bay survives intact but obscured by vegetation. The mill race passed through the pond-bay at SJ7883 0888 through brick built arches and was channelled between walls of modern brickwork. OS FI 1975 <1>
