Summary

Analysis of stone roofing shingles at Yarchester (PRN 00302) and Wroxeter (PRN 00026) suggested that they were quarried at Bouldon. A quarry was known to be worked for flags in 1839 and five disused quarries are shown in the locality on the OS 6ins map of c 1963.

Description

Possible Roman stone quarrying. Geological and chemical analysis of stone roofing shingles at Yarchester (PRN 00302) and Wroxeter (PRN 00026) led TC Cantrill to the belief that they were quarried at Bouldon. A quarry was known to be worked for flags in 1839 and five disused quarries are shown in the locality on the OS 6ins map of c 1963, the largest being centred at SO546 854. No quarries are shown on the OS 2ins map of 1817 <1a>
