Description

Limekilns, now disused. Probably early C19. Roughly coursed and dressed limestone rubble with red brick to arches. High buttressed revetment wall with 5 round-headed kilns, open to top and with brick ovens to rear, linked by round-arched tunnel <1>

Originally part of PRN 00501, the winding drum and inclined plane which served these kilns <2>

Old lime kilns shown <4>

Depicted on Llanymynech Tithe map of 1838 [<5>]. A 2003 field inspection carried out as part of the Montgomery Canal archaeology assessment noted that they were in good condition and the area around them tidy, suggesting a degree of relatively recent restoration. Condition rated as near intact <6>

Row of lime burning kilns, which face east onto the old Ellesmere Canal. Six kilns were recorded, with the entrance of the western-most one now blocked up. Behind the stone façade, the firing chambers are connected. Vertical kilns of this type and the configuration of all six being inter-connected, suggests continuous lime production on site. <7>

Described as a bank of 5 early 19th century lime kilns above the canal in a good state of repair. <8>

Significant as they are located above the canal level (ie the drawing-tunnels are at wharf level while the shafts are high above) suggesting that some burnt lime was loaded into boats here. The kilns were supplied by an inclined plane (PRN 00501). <9>

Photographed in 1997. <10>

Photographs taken 21st February 2019. <11>
