Description
Substantial terrace or retaining wall at the rear of the properties on the east side of Castle Gates, below the west side of the Dana. Observed/noted by M D Watson behind the Bulls Head, no.14 <1> and a measured profile drawn at the rear of the Castle Vaults P.H. during a UAD field visit <2>
There, it stands 5.42m high from back yard level (slightly above street level), constructed of mixed sandstone types, probably Nesscliff and Grinshill, with some rustication to the surface. A second terrace (62) c.2m high and set further back completes the profile up to the Dana, and is possibly contemporary. Date: must post-date or be contemporary with the construction of the Dana footpath in c.1790 <3>; does not necessarily post-date the lowering of the street in 1825 (60251). According to R E Davies, the walls are contemporary with the Dana, i.e. 1790 <4>
