Description

The churchyard is marked on the OS 1881 1:2500 map [<2>], at which time the church was dedicated to St Peter & St Paul. There is some local tradition that the promontory on which the church stands may be a prehistoric fort. This interpretation might be supported by the existence of a substantial bank across the neck of the promontory. A site visit appeared to indicate that the earthwork feature was unlikely to be either a result of grave build up or a feature, such as a ha-ha, connected with Hodnet Park. <1>

The location of the castle, suggests that the church already occupied the promontory by this date. <3>

There is a reference, dated 1883, to 'rock cut graves under Hodnet Parish Church', with stone pillars under their heads <4>
