Description

The Shropshire Union of Railways & Canals (SURC) was formed in the mid 1840s by local canal companies worried by the rise of railways, and chaired by the Earl of Powis. The company put forward an ambitious scheme to build railways from Crewe to Worcester and to Newtown (Powys) by draining and converting their canals. Only the double-track line between Shrewsbury and Stafford was built, and of that the section between Wellington and Shrewsbury was a joint enterprise between SURC and the Shrewsbury & Birmingham Railway (SBR). ->

-> In 1847, the SURC was leased to the LNWR, the SBR's main rival. Both the joint section and the SURC Stafford line opened in June 1849, a few months before the SBR to Wolverhampton was completed. With the LNWR blocking the extension of the SBR line, the Stafford line formed the main connection to London for a while. Though the SBR connection was finally made in 1854, the Stafford route remained the only through service until 1861. ->

-> The line was closed in 1969, except for a section serving the Donnington military base. <1>
