Description
This was the biggest piece of engineering work on the Shrewsbury & Hereford Railway. It carried the railway over the Rea Brook and led to a bridge over Abbey Foregate. The viaduct, of brick and ashlar, took just four months to build, has 18 arches, and is some 700 feet long. The bridge over the road, designed by E Jeffreys of Shrewsbury, used the then novel box-girder principle. Its wrought iron works was originally painted dull red to harmonise with the stone of the nearby Abbey church. <1>
