Description
A 1739 map of Tong and Tong Norton [<1>] shows a field within the former deer park called Old Lodge Close. There are two features within this field which could represent the site of the implied former hunting lodge. Firstly, a small square enclosure (approximately 50m square) is shown immediately north east of and protruding south into the area occupied by the Home Farm (i.e. Tong Park Farm). It does not conform to the pattern of field enclosures shown on the map and could be the site of a lodge, perhaps recently succeeded by the farmhouse (which is dated 1736 - see PRN 17658). ->
-> The second curious feature in the field is a subrectangular enclosure some 170m east of the square one. Whilst this could also be the site of the former lodge, it contains a smaller rectangular feature in the centre which resembles a pond, perhaps a fishpond. ->
-> Neither feature appears on Foxall's field name map of the parish [<3>], which was based on an 1855 survey. <2>
