Description

Act of Parliament 1826. Work started from the Nantwich Cheshire end towards High Offley, Staffs. John Wilson as contractor and Alexander Easton as resident engineer. Link with Donnington area and Shrewsbury considered. Possible extension of Donnington Wood Canal (PRN 03407) surveyed but found impractical, so branch from Norbury, Staffs to join Shrewsbury Canal (PRN 03410) at Wappenshall was chosen instead and authorised by an Act of 1827 . Canal opened throughout including Newport branch 1835. ..Total length 39 1/2 miles from Autherley, Staffs to Nantwich..1845 amalgamated with Ellesmere and Chester Canal Co and took their name. became part of S.U.R. &CC 1846, leased by LNWR 1847.
